Susannah was a runner for many years. A couple months ago, she gave her husband a number of t-shirts that she had worn in various races. Since she wasn't going to use them anymore, she suggested he donate them. Instead, Susannah's husband called me and asked me to make this quilt as her surprise Christmas present. I hope she'll be delighted and touched as she opens the box on Christmas morning. Notice, especially, the red logo in the center, The Steamtown Marathon 2006. He emphasized that he wanted it highlighted in the center of the quilt because this was the marathon where she qualified for the Olympics.
As
I was making the quilt, several things came to mind. First, what a
thoughtful husband he is! This is such a special Christmas present.
Then, I realized how much I...
admire all my friends and family who run with such discipline and courage. These include my dear friends Larissa and Luz, and my brother-in-law, Antonio, who this year finished his first triathlon in great time. It was then that I made a personal commitment to myself for 2013: I, too, will start running. I doubt that I'll ever run a marathon, but I promised to myself that I'll jog around the neighborhood or work out in the treadmill two or three times a week. I'm determined to fulfill this personal commitment.

So,
back to the quilt. I'm not sure if you will be able to appreciate all
the details in the picture, but I outlined each one of the t-shirts with
free motion, even the letters and numbers, and every detail in the
characters like the Santa Claus reindeer, the horse, the cow, the cherry
blossom flowers, etc. In most of the t-shirts I used my Trapunto
Technique. The sashing around them has little free motion spirals, and
there is also free motion all over the outside border. I'm really happy
with the result, and I wish Susannah, her husband, and their loved ones
a very happy Christmas.
